Ebert made his Broadway debut as an understudy in the Tony Award-winning 2010 play *Red* and has since starred in shows like *Matilda The Musical* (Tony Award), *Pass Over*, *Thérèse Raquin*, and *Time and the Conways*. Off Broadway, he won a 2019 Lucille Lortel Award for appearing in the pre-Broadway production of *Pass Over* and also won a 2012 Obie Award for his performance in the Pulitzer-nominated *4000 Miles*.

I have seen Antoinette Nwandu's <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/pass-over">Pass Over</a> three times: once on Amazon Prime, where it was directed by Spike Lee; once off Broadway at <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lincoln-center-mitzi-e-newhouse-theater">Lincoln Center Theater</a>; and the final time in its current version on Broadway. And every time I've seen it, the play has had a different ending, to reflect the current moment. But while the world has changed since when the play premiered in 2017 at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, it has also stayed maddeningly the same. As one character, Moses, puts it: "Same shit. Jess da day dat's changed."Pass Over is inspired by Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, but instead of tramps in bowler hats waiting for a man who never arrives, it's two young Black men (Namir Smallwood and Jon Michael Hill) in black baseball caps trying to get off of the dilapidated concrete block. They want &nbsp;to enter "the Promised Land," where they will finally have warm food, clean socks, and an existence without fear.Yet despite how hard they try, Moses and Kitch can't seem to leave that block.&nbsp;Why? It's an invisible force that traps them there, freezes their limbs, and pulls them back. Call it white supremacy. Call it institutionalized racism. Call it police brutality. Smartly, the play never mentions any of those words, but it doesn't need to. Pass Over allows the audience to fill in the blanks, just like how Waiting for Godot never mentioned the words "existential dread." &nbsp;Pass Over has three actors in its cast, who reprise their roles from off Broadway: Smallwood, Hill, and Gabriel Ebert. Smallwood and Hill bring a lived-in quality to the relationship between Moses and Kitch. We don't know how the two men got on that block, but Smallwood and Hill have a natural chemistry, adding depth to the characters and their relationship, and giving a sense that they have seen many days together.&nbsp;Director Danya Taymor directs with a deft touch; she smartly balances the broad absurdist elements of the play, the parts where the characters go wide and broad, while also giving room for Smallwood and Hill to have moments of quiet and tenderness. They may be in a parable, but Moses and Kitch are also human.The third actor in Pass Over, Ebert, plays two different roles: as the congenial Mister and as a police officer. While Ebert successfully conveys the cruelty of law enforcement, his performance as Mister is more frightening. Mister seems kind and benign on the surface but there's a threatening edge to him — Ebert expertly conveys the duality of this Karen-like figure.&nbsp;That's not to say that Pass Over is a bleak work. There are moments of levity throughout, particularly when Moses and Kitch riff with each other. An early exchange of just the phrase "I know you know" repeated a dozen times, with different intonations, had the audience guffawing — it's Beckettian nonsense mixed with contemporary musicality.&nbsp;<a href="https://theundefeated.com/features/playwright-antoinette-nwandu-is-healing-her-audience-and-herself/" target="_blank">When I interviewed playwright Antoinette Nwandu</a> about Pass Over,&nbsp;she said that she has changed the ending of the play three times, the biggest change being in this new Broadway version. Not to give any spoilers away, but to me, this new version is the strongest.&nbsp;In all three versions, Pass Over takes on challenging themes — police brutality, systemic racism, and liberal hypocrisy — but does it in a way that is stylistically original, and does not feel overstuffed or didactic. It may be maddening from an audience perspective to have the characters be trapped in one place for 90 minutes, but racism is maddening.&nbsp;What makes this version of Pass Over so successful is its awareness of the audience watching it. The play is now being presented to a Broadway audience who likely have the phrases "diversity," "white privilege," and "inclusion" in their regular vocabulary (though audiences who aren't as socially aware might find the previous versions of Pass Over&nbsp;more illuminating).&nbsp;When presenting works about systemic racism to an audience that is mostly liberal, there's always the risk that the audience will believe that because they are one of the "good" ones, they have no stake in the fight. Pass Over does not let any of us off the hook; we are all standing on that concrete block, these issues affect all of us.The previous versions of Pass Over shocked the audience. This version of the play implicates the audience. At the same time, it leaves us with a possible pathway forward. This Pass Over is a more optimistic work, saying that these big issues are solvable. We, not just the characters but the collective we, just need the will to do it. The Promised Land is within our grasp, if we choose to take that first step. ‘Pass Over’ Broadway review - no one is 'off the hook' in this challenging yet optimistic play

The August Wilson Theatre, located in the heart of Manhattan, is one of New York's iconic historical landmarks. Named after Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson, the venue hosts an array of award-winning Broadway performances. This theatre has an expansive total seating capacity of 1,222, making it an ideal environment for large scale performances. The interior reflects an Art Nouveau style featuring a grand lobby with high ceilings and intricately designed walls. The theatre’s plush seating, opulent detailing, and great acoustics create an intimate experience for viewers, compelling them to feel a part of the performance. Note: There has been cast changes since this review!We are rapidly drifting into that peculiarly English time of year when even the sanest of actors and production companies seem to take leave of their senses. Men dress up as women, women dress up as men and well-worn jokes that never ought to have seen the light of day in the first place are resurrected with abandon.Yes, panto season is with us once again. But '<a href="/show/matilda-the-musical">Matilda The Musical</a>', even though it is being aired during this silliest of seasons, isn't really a panto, even if it has some hallmarks of that genre.Based on Roald Dahl's novel 'Matilda' (first published in 1988 and turned into a film directed by Danny DeVito in 1996) the musical was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and has book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. It is the story of an unwanted daughter who turns out to be something of a prodigy. Mr Wormwood is a dodgy second-hand car salesman who rather foolishly sells clapped-out bangers to the Russian Mafia. Mrs Wormwood has a penchant for Latin American dancing and dresses in garish costumes. The Wormwoods dislike their daughter Matilda intensely. They do not understand her interest in books and encourage her to be like her older brother and fall comatose in front of the 'telly'. And Mr Wormwood even goes so far as to refer to Matilda as 'boy' even though she repeatedly corrects him. When Matilda heads off to school she surprises her teacher Miss Honey with her mathematical skills and intelligence. But she falls foul of the child-hating headmistress, the former hammer-thrower Miss Trunchbull.A small army of children tackle the numerous roles, with multiple child actors rotating the parts at different performances - a nightmare I would think for the production staff, having to rehearse so many actors. But a quick glance through the biogs in the programme tells you that many of the small actors in this cast have more experience than a lot of actors get in a lifetime. They've done it all from The Sound of Music through Peter Pan and Oliver!, covering Macbeth along the way. And this wealth of talent and experience shines through all the performances, including those actors making their professional débuts. There's terrific support from the bigger actors too. In particular, Bertie Carvel makes the most of the plumb role of Miss Trunchbull making her a controlled, but incredibly sadistic head who delights in putting children into the 'chokey' cupboard. Melanie La Barrie is a wonderfully mumsy, story-loving librarian, and Paul Kaye is equally well-cast as the pushy, second-hand car dealer.On the occasion I saw the show, Cleo Demetriou took the lead as Matilda. Ms Demetriou is an enormously talented young actor with a charming singing voice to match. She combines in the role intelligent confidence with a certain intellectual aloofness, but finally shows she is just a child who needs a cuddle now and then too.One mum sitting near to me declared the show 'brilliant' and her offspring sat wide-eyed and transfixed throughout as if ET had just landed in person on the stage. In fact, all the children in the audience seemed totally mesmerised even though some of them were barely of school age. Not only that, but many seemed surprisingly clued-in to some of the more adult jokes which are sensibly injected at various points to keep the adults as happy as the smaller members of the audience. However, if my ears served me correctly, there were a couple of lewd comments from Mrs Wormwood which seemed unnecessarily gratuitous given the audience composition.The second half does not quite match up to the first in terms of the humour and tends towards the sentimental even if the final message about there not always being happy endings has much to commend it. So, I would not go quite as far as my neighbour in describing it as 'brilliant', but <a href="/show/matilda-the-musical">Matilda the Musical</a>&nbsp;is nevertheless hugely enjoyable and cracking Christmas fun. <a href="/show/matilda-the-musical">Matilda Tickets</a> are now on sale. &nbsp;"It is the best new British musical since <a href="/show/billy-elliot">Billy Elliot</a>." The Booth Theatre opened on October 16, 1913, as an adjoining venue with the [Shubert Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/shubert-theatre). The building was designed by Henry B. Herts, and the first production there was Arnold Bennett's play *The Great Adventure*.

Named after the actor Edwin Booth, brother to the infamous John Wilkes Booth, the venue was actually the second New York theatre to bear his name. The first was built in 1869 on 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue, but it was demolished in 1965.

The facade and parts of the current Booth's interior have been designated New York City landmarks.
