The Lyceum Theatre is one of Broadway's longest running, and most storied venues. It is the oldest continually operating theatre in New York City, delivering its rich tradition and history since opening its doors in 1903. Uniquely, it is one of the few theatres that was built and still operates as a legitimate theatre. The stunning Beaux-Arts style facade and grandiose interior, designed by architects Herts & Tallant, are part of what make a night at Lyceum truly unforgettable one. The theatre has been home to a vast array of productions, from plays to musicals, and has played a key role in shaping the Broadway landscape.  The Lyceum Theatre is prominently situated at 149 W 45th Street, almost in the very heart of Manhattan. It is well-serviced by public transport with several subway stations nearby - Times Square-42nd St (N,Q,R,S,1,2,3,7), 42nd St-Bryant Park (B,D,F,M), and 47th-50th streets-Rockefeller Center (B,D,F,M). Taxis and ride-share services like Uber are also readily available. Given its central location, it is also easily reachable by foot if you're already downtown.

For [*Here Lies Love*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27415-here-lies-love-on-broadway), the storied [Broadway Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/broadway-theatre) has transformed into Club Millennium, a bright, pulsating discotheque sans orchestra seats. A disc jockey (Moses Villarama) pumps up the incoming crowd as energetic ushers, clad in pink jumpsuits, play air traffic control for patrons on the dance floor. A fitting setting for a musical about the rise of a dictatorship, no? 

[David Byrne](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/david-byrne) and Fatboy Slim’s musical, which began as a concept album, chronicles the ascent of Imelda Marcos’s power, fame, and fortune — and subsequent fall. Director Alex Timbers zeros in on Imelda’s lavish spending of ill-gotten money. And its narrative framework hangs on a fun historical fact: Imelda had a mirrored disco ball inside her New York townhouse and was a famously large presence in the city's disco scene. 

The show’s timeline spans from Imelda’s childhood in the 1930s to the People Power Revolution in 1986, telling her rags-to-riches story through disco-pop beats. A local beauty pageant deems Imelda the “Rose of Tacloban,” a title that inspires her to move to Manila, where she meets Congressman Ferdinand Marcos and helps him clinch the presidential election. The rest is a painful history of corruption, repression, and violence.

The immersive musical first bowed off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2013 before making waves in London, Australia, and stateside in Seattle. Now, *Here Lies Love* brings the [first all-Filipino cast on Broadway](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/meet-the-all-filipino-here-lies-love-broadway-cast), with a company including Jose Llana (Ferdinand Marcos) and Conrad Ricaroma (Ninoy Aquino), who originated their roles downtown. 

[Arielle Jacobs](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/interviews/arielle-jacobs-seizes-the-starring-role-of-imelda-marcos-in-here-lies-love-broadway) glitters as Imelda Marcos with her dulcet vocals and ability to transform from a “young girl from Leyte” to the stony “Steel Butterfly,” as the dictator came to be known. (Costume designer Clint Ramos’s pleated, butterfly-sleeve dresses help the metamorphosis.) Jacobs is disarming in the role.

As Ferdinand, Llana energizes supporters with friendly handshakes, and later, he asserts dominance with a simple glare. Ricamora's Ninoy, as the opposition leader, riles the crowd with his charming confidence and shines with solo numbers like “The Fabulous One.” Another standout is the incomparable [Lea Salonga](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/lea-salonga) as Aurora Aquino. Her number, “Just Ask the Flowers,” is a showstopper. (Salonga will play the role through August 13.)

The show's real star is the glitzy, all-encompassing set by David Korins. As the action unfolds, stage platforms shift, audience members shuffle, and video projections display live-action crowd shots and historical documents on large screens throughout the auditorium. A giant disco ball spins, reflecting light across the space. Annie-B Parson’s electrifying choreography, which includes a Filipino line dance with the audience, furthers the nightclub scene. 

Audience members whose knowledge of Imelda Marcos is limited to the fact that she owned 3,000 pairs of shoes will only leave with a partial understanding of this violent period. The musical has no book, and the punchy songs paint broad strokes of the 60-year history. (The program, given to the stage floor patrons upon exiting the theatre, includes an insert with a more detailed historical timeline that fills in the show’s gaps.)

Still, this rollicking, form-breaking musical party is well worth an RSVP.

The plant at the centre of <a href="/show/little-shop-of-horrors">Little Shop of Horrors</a> that feeds on human blood may have had its sights on world domination, but the musical that was based on the low-budget 1960 comedy sci-fi film of the same name has actually long achieved it, so it ultimately got what it wanted. And now the show has come full circle, 37 years on from its Off-Off-Broadway beginnings at the WPA Theatre (now no more) in May 1982, before moving to the larger Orpheum Theater on Second Avenue in the East Village that summer, where it ran for five years and became the highest-grossing show in Off-Broadway history until then, to find a new home at another Off-Broadway house just off Eighth Avenue in midtown Manhattan.In the intervening years, it has been turned into a feature film and played in the West End and on Broadway (the latter in a new production in 2003 that ran for less than a year at the Virginia Theatre, now the August Wilson), but its true home is a more modestly scaled place like the 270-seater <a href="/theatres/westside-theatre">Westside Theatre</a>, a former Baptist church built in 1889 that has been used as a theatre space since the mid-1970s.But while it is naturally a special pleasure and privilege to see the show at close quarters again, everything about this new version screams Broadway, from its above-the-title casting of multiple Tony Award nominees Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard and two-time Tony winner <a href="/actor-profile/christian-borle">Christian Borle</a>, to its creative staff, led by director Michael Mayer, Tony winner for his original production of Spring Awakening. And unfortunately not everyone alas is willing to let the show sing and speak for itself, but&nbsp;seeks to portray it on a larger canvas.The production often feels too large and indulgent on this small stage, starting with Julian Crouch's expansive set that consumes the theatre. This may be the priciest Skid Row ever brought to an Off-Broadway stage.The performances are at times similarly exaggerated. In trying to mine new colours for Audrey, the abused floral shop assistant who falls for her work colleague Seymour as he nurtures a new exotic plant that he names Audrey II after her, Tammy Blanchard channels her into a sultry Rita Heyworth-inspired character, with her songs slowed down into torch songs of despair. 'Somewhere that's Green' sounds less aspirational of a better life than a dread doubt of ever achieving it.Jonathan Groff seems similarly depressed and downtrodden as Seymour, while Christian Borle plays the dentist Orin and a range of other characters purely as bright, eager caricature.There are some compensating pleasures from the trio of street urchins Ronnette (Ari Groover), Crystal (Salome Smith) and Chiffon (Joy Woods), who are a kind of Greek chorus observing and commenting on the action in Alan Menken's wonderful pastiche score. It is here that the enduring pleasures of the show itself are most apparent.Nicholas Mahon's new puppet designs for the plant itself are impressive as it grows ever larger. The Lyceum Theatre is Broadway's oldest continually operating theatre. Designed by Herts & Tallant and built by producer-manager David Frohman, the theatre officially opened on November 2, 1903. It was a replacement for Frohman's previous Lyceum Theatre on Fourth Street, which closed in 1902.

The inaugural production at the venue was the play *The Proud Prince*. The Lyceum Theatre was purchased in 1940 by a conglomerate of producers which included George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and in 1950, the Shubert Organization took ownership of the theatre. In 1974, the Lyceum Theatre became the first Broadway theatre to be granted landmark status.
